Passover

Today is the first day of Passover. Passover, Hebrew Pesaḥ or Pesach, in Judaism, commemorates the Hebrews’ liberation from slavery  in Egypt and the “passing over” of the forces of destruction, or the sparing of the firstborn of the Israelites, when the Lord “smote the land of Egypt” on the eve of the Exodus. Passover is celebrated from Wednesday, April 1 to Thursday, April 9 in 2026.

Easter

Today is Easter. Easter, Latin Pascha, Greek Pascha, is the principal festival of the Christian church, which celebrates the Resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after his Crucifixion.

Orthodox Easter

Today is Orthodox Easter. Orthodox Christians in Europe, Africa and the Middle East often celebrate Easter later than most in the western world. It's because they use a different calendar to work out what day Easter should fall on.

Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah)

Today is Holocaust Remembrance Day.  The full name of the day commemorating the victims of the Holocaust  is “Yom Hashoah Ve-Hagevurah“– literally the “Day of (Remembrance of) the Holocaust and the Heroism.” It is marked on the 27th day in the month of Nisan  — a week after the seventh day of Passover.

National ASL Day

Today is National ASL Day. National ASL Day celebrates both the existence and history of American Sign Language. On 15 April, 1817, the institution later renamed the American School for the Deaf opened. Village sign languages, like Martha’s Vineyard Sign Language, intermingled there with French Sign Language forging modern ASL.

Earth Day

Today is Earth Day.  Every year on April 22, Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970.
