What is Milling?

When a road is milled, the Contractor removes the top layer of pavement from the roadway.  The road should still be passable however drivers should be aware for raised manholes and catch basins.  All manholes and catchbasins are then checked to see if their height needs to be adjusted, and the ones that need to be adjusted are adjusted.  Any cracks on the road are then sealed and where necessary, the roadway is patched with asphalt.  Once this is all completed the new layer of pavement is applied to the street.  On the day of paving, no vehicle traffic will be allowed on the street.  Please move your vehicle to an area outside of the construction area if you need to get out during the day.  At all times during the construction process, on street parking will be prohibited and will be enforced by the Reading Police Department.  Road work typically occurs Monday to Friday, 7AM to 5PM.

What is Reclamation?

When a road is reclaimed, the contractor lowers all of the manholes and water gates below ground level.  The existing pavement is then pulverized and brought back to a gravel surface and re-graded in order to get a good base course for the new pavement to sit on.  Once this is completed, the first layer of pavement is installed.  The contractor will then adjust all manholes, catchbasins, and watergates to their final height.  Unfortunately, this means that people driving on the road will have to avoid the raised structures so that they do not damage their tires.  Please use caution if you are driving near any of these raised structures.  The street will be open to abutters only during this phase.  Once evertything else is complete, the final layer of pavement is placed on the roadway.  During the reclaimation of the roadway, and the placement of both layers of pavement, vehicular access will only be allowed to emergency vehicles only.  Please move your vehicle to an area outside of the construction area if you need to get out during the day.  At all times during the construction process, on street parking will be prohibited and will be enforced by the Reading Police Department.  Road work typically occurs Monday to Friday, 7AM to 5PM.
