(Examples from other Municipalities)

Outside the Box Mural Program

Application Deadline Extended to May 13, 2020!!!

Think outside the box! That is what the Town of Reading, MA Planning and Economic Development Division team is doing through a new public art program. Starting on March 18, 2020, the Town of Reading will be accepting applications for the first round of the Outside the Box Mural Program. The Town is issuing a call for talented individual artists or artist collaboratives to submit an application and original designs for consideration.

Original works of art will be installed and painted on Town owned utility boxes. The select utility boxes in this first round are located at key “downtown gateways” including: Washington Street and Main Street, Haven Street and Main Street, and Salem Street and Main Street.

Artists are asked to submit original ideas of public art the represents a visual interpretation of Reading’s townscape, creativity, community pride or art itself. The Town Planning and Economic Development Division will be commissioning a minimum of five (5) original works of art this Spring/Summer 2020. Applications will be reviewed by a small committee of Town staff and volunteers. Selected artists will be contracted with the Town and receive an $800 stipend to cover the cost of the artists time, paints, and other materials.

Initiated by community volunteers, local non-profit organizations, and Town staff, this program is designed to inspire community creativity, support creative placemaking initiatives, and draw foot-traffic to downtown local businesses. The Outside the Box Mural Program will bring public art to unexpected places and allow everyone to access art. Town Planning staff are also planning to create an online public art map and self-guided walking tour to highlight this work and other public art around Town.

Applications must be submitted by May 13, 2020. Applications should be submitted electronically by scanning and emailing to Staff Planner Andrew MacNichol at [email protected]i.reading.ma.us. Submissions that are to be mailed shall be sent to C/o Andrew MacNichol, Staff Planner, Outside the Box Mural Project, Reading Town Hall, Planning and Economic Development Division, 16 Lowell Street, Reading, MA 01867.
