The town and schools strongly preferred not to request an Override as part of the April local election because that would require the presentation of two different budgets in public over the preceding winter. In recent years, employees who have seen that their positions might be eliminated have not waited to find out and simply left for other communities. A fall election avoids listing specific budget cuts which would likely lead to more staff departure.
The state would not allow the Town to combine with the September state primary election, and the Town Clerk determined she could not hire enough election workers to combine it with the Presidential election in November. Even if enough election staffing could be found, the savings might have been only about $2,000.
