What does the town spend money, and how does that compare to other communities?

Reading is remarkably dull in that it spends money on things in a way that is very similar to other communities, as shown by the table below:

A couple of points on spending are worth mentioning – because the town offers advanced life support through the fire department, the town collects about $800,000 annually in ambulance fees which far exceeds the difference in spending shown above; education spending is close to average but is low per pupil, as Reading has an above average amount of public school students at 17.4% of the population (Peers have 15.8% - with a range from Westford 22.1% to Stoneham 10.7%).
