The Challenger/Special Olympics Soccer program is offered through the Reading Recreation Division, the ARC of East Middlesex, and the Reading United Soccer Club. Children at least seven (7) years of age by August 1st will be offered instruction in basic soccer skills. Players participate in offensive and defensive skill building activities and scrimmage games each week. Players of all skill levels are welcome. All players should come to Sturges Park Field for the first day of the program, which will be on Sunday, September 12th.
The Junior, Senior and Masters level programs provide an opportunity for competition in Special Olympics soccer. Teams participate in a placement tournament for decisions about an appropriate skill level (Assessment date tournament - TBD). The teams then participate in the State Tournament which will be held on November 8th . Athletes wanting to participate in Special Olympics must complete a medical certification form which is signed by a physician.
The registration fee is $40, and includes a shirt, shorts, shin guards, and socks. Volunteers from the community are needed to ensure the success of the program. The Juniors (ages 7-13) are coached by Bob Greabell (978-664-4906). The Seniors (ages 14-21) and Masters (age 22+) are coached by Ralph D’Amico (781 - 944 – 9411).
